Bearing Fruit

Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they heard the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.

                                                                                          Luke 8:11-15

Jesus is sharing a parable here about the different kinds of people that receive His truth. The one who is along the path are who have heard but too soon the devil comes and lies to them telling them they don’t need it and they don’t come to believe. The one whom fell on the rock received it with joy but when times got hard they fell away because they didn’t have a deep relationship with the Lord. The ones who fell among the thorns hear His word and believe it but don’t live it out because they get too caught up with the materials and worries of this world. So they stayed stagnant and didn’t bear fruit as Jesus wants us to. And the ones who fall on the good soil are those who hear it and believe it and live it out while bearing fruit.

As Christians we are asked to share His love and truth with others. We just plant the seed, we aren’t the ones who save people. So I think this passage can encourage us to pray for the people we share with and ask God that they would have good soil and accept the words they hear as God speaks through us. That they would receive it and in turn live it out and bear fruit. Praying also that we would continually bear fruit. By the strength of the Lord, not of our own strength, because we can do nothing on our own.

My application for these verses is to more fervently pray for those who hear His word, that they would receive it and bear fruit. And that we as believers would also continue to hear from the Lord and let it soak into our lives to live it out. Not just being hearers of the word but also doers.
