Every athlete
exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable
wreath, but we an imperishable.
1
Corinthians 9:25
As an athlete you must use self-control in
what you eat, in what how you exercise, in how much you sleep, and many more
things. Making it a way of life to prepare yourself for the game you play. But
on this earth the only rewards you will receive are going to fade. The trophy
will burn one day, the metals will turn to ash, the diplomas will disappear,
and all the material goods received from it will be gone. But as we as
Christians run the race we are given we obtain a reward that will never fade
away. Part of our reward is one day being with Jesus in heaven for eternity.
For eternal life is knowing Jesus Christ and seeing Him for who He is. This
should give us all the more motivation to live a life worthy of the calling
which we have, living a life worthy of the gospel. We press on to continually
push ourselves towards the Lord and draw closer to Him. With the help of the
Holy Spirit having self-control and staying away from those things which we
know will disqualify us from the race and drag us down. As Pastor Mike said a
few weeks ago, “Be aware of the sin which can so easily entangle you and stay
away from it.” Don’t be foolish in the way you live, just having a good time
and not focusing on the finish line. Just think about this for a second, if we
know Jesus as our savior we will be with Him forever! Forever is a long time!
An eternity spent with Jesus in the fullness of His presence. That is quite an
amazing reward to receive.
Application- ask the Lord to give me wisdom in those sins
which could so easily entangle me and press on.
