That I may know Him
and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like
Him in His death.
Philippians
3:10
What does it truly mean to know Him and the power of His
resurrection? Does it mean to hear about Him and consider the works He has done
and just not do anything about it? Does it mean to seek after Him and have a
relationship with Him and through prayer realize the power and immensity of
what He has done for us? I think it is the latter option. Seeking after Jesus
Christ and knowing Him on a personal level, and by the grace of God having
knowledge of what He has done for us and live it out. When I think about
knowing Him I also think about eternal life, as it says in 1 John, that eternal
life is knowing Him, not just knowing Him for a short while, but knowing Him
intimately forever! That is eternal life, Jesus Christ. And what does it mean
to share in His sufferings? I believe it means to be open to share in what
Jesus went through, knowing that He can sympathize with us in our weaknesses
because He too went through times of difficulty. Yet He was without sin. And
becoming like Him in His death. Does that mean we must die a martyr’s death to
be saved? No, I think it means to die to ourselves. Just as Christ has died, so
also I die to my sin and the burdens that hold me down. I die to what I want
and open myself up to what He wants for me. That is the call of a Christian, to
die as He has died. Maybe not physically, but killing our flesh. A daily
necessity for following Jesus.
